Offering bright primary fruit with good complexity in the form of spice, tobacco and dried herbs, you could serve the Marne 180 at a holiday party with a platter of French cheeses.

There is always a meaning in a name and the "Marne 180" is no different. Marne means marl, the type of soil that this vineyard is planted and the 180 references the degree of exposure it has as well. Knowing this, you can better understand the richness, intensity and volume found in this wine. The nose is explosive with blueberry-pie filling, spiced prunes, dates and sweet baking spices. The palate is luscious, but with more earthy notes of bitter chocolate, coffee and graphite. This wine is huge and will be rewarded with some time in the cellar. (2028-2040

The Tedeschi 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Marne 180 shows rosemary twig and balsam herb that I recognize across this rather cool vintage. These medicinal aromas work well given the very contracted fruit and the textural darkness that comes with the unique appassimento process (with air-dried fruit). You get aromas of dried plum and prune with plenty of generous spice and tarry smoke, but what stands out most are those dried herbal tones. The alcohol content is 16.5% in this 140,000-bottle release.

The 2018 Amarone dell Valpolicella Marne 180 is spicy and fresh with peppery florals, rose buds and hints of rubber tire...? It impresses on its soft textures and round, fruity personality, as salty minerals and brisk acids further enliven the expression. It finishes long and persistent with hints of tobacco and dark inner florals. This is very likable and fun on the palate, yet its bouquet takes away from the experience.
