Ripe berries, sweet tobacco and a hint of walnut oil on the nose, following through to a medium-bodied palate with fruit and spice-coated tannins that give a fresh, almost tangy finish. Bright and tasty now, but may settle into something even better. Try from 2023." (91 pts.)

The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino shows crushed strawberries and damp earth up front, yet with time in the glass, it opens further, developing notes of sweet spice, cedar, minerals, and dusty florals. Pure red fruits with sweet spices and inner florals all develop on the palate. The 2017 finishes clean, resonating on pretty red fruits and florals in a graceful and feminine expression of Sangiovese.

The Poggio Il Castellare 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is a hot-vintage wine, and there's no mistaking this fact. You can feel the power and the extra concentration of the fruit thanks to its aromas of blackberry preserves and cherry confit. Those robust tones are followed by tilled earth and baking spice. This entry-level Rosso ends with sweet cherry flavors and shows some tight astringency in terms of its tannins. That astringency turns bitter on the close.
